My introduction to semi-pro photography life started in 2010, with the purchase of a Canon EOS 1000D camera. Before this I had mucked around with many other film and digital personal cameras (remember the Hanimax 110 cameras of the 80s?!), and I still possess a large box of film photos, and an even larger hard drive of digital ones. Moving from small-town-feel Perth to big-smoke-London in 2009 I felt the need to photograph all the unique and interesting people, sights and nightlife I was seeing, with a half decent camera. This led me to sneaking the 1000D into pubs, bars and large venues to photograph live gigs.

After a few months I started working legitimately with online music magazines and my live music photographs of mostly UK indie artists were being published. I also upgraded to a Canon 7D, and eventually a Canon 5D mk iii. Around this time I was also involved in nightclub photography, which was fun for a while, but as a woman it has its (obvious) downsides.

In 2015 after a few too many years of late nights and hangovers, I started becoming more interested in food photography. This consumed my life for a good few years, but after having my son in 2019, there was little time for faffing around making plates look perfect and backgrounds “just so”.

Throughout my pregnancy I managed to take some photos of my growing belly, although looking back I wished I had hired someone to do this for me. There is only so far you can go shooting yourself while 8 months pregnant…

So this brings us to 2024, and a renewed passion for photographing people. I prefer chaos over polished, candid over posed, natural over structured. We are so lucky in Perth that we can use nature as a backdrop, and I reckon we should utilise this as much as possible.
