Maternity Sessions

It can be super daunting being the only one in front of the camera at your maternity session.  During your session I will give you some direction on how to pose, where to look and what to do to ensure you look like the goddess that you are.  My aim is to make you feel comfortable, so we will have a chat, have a laugh, and take some gorgeous photographs.

Early on in your third trimester is the best time to have your session.  If you already know when that will be, then get booking as early as possible to secure your date!  Between 30 and 36 weeks is the best time to be photographed. You have a nice, round bump, you still have a bit of energy, and you aren’t completely sick and tired of being pregnant at that stage 😉

I primarily shoot on location around the Perth metro area. If you don’t have a particular location in mind, I have many favourite spots and am happy to suggest some to you.  If you would prefer an indoor session I’m more than happy to come to your house, bringing my portable studio setup with me.

Most outdoor maternity sessions take place just before sunset, so we can capture that diffused, sun-drenched golden hour glow.  Depending on which time of year, the start time will vary (around 6.30pm start time in summer, 4.30pm start time in winter, etc.).

Early bird?  I can also offer sunrise maternity sessions.  Perfect for the mama who just can’t sleep during pregnancy!  On these sessions we need to make the most of the early morning sunshine – around 5am start time at the height of summer, through to 7am in winter.

Indoor sessions aren’t so specific a timeframe.  I prefer to shoot any time in the morning, provided the sun is up and shining through your windows.

Not if you don’t want me to.  I check with you before our maternity session on whether or not you are comfortable with me sharing images from the session.  You might be happy for me to, and then decide to change your mind – completely fine!  Just let me know and I will keep your images private.  If there are specific images that you prefer I don’t share (e.g. where more of your body is on show), that is also fine.

Nearly all of my clients say that they feel awkward in front of the camera. It is to be expected, and I do too!  I won’t leave you hanging during our maternity session, and will guide you from start to finish. I’ll advise on what you need to do to get the most natural poses that show off your bump and help you to bring out the goddess that you are.

You do you!  More natural hair and makeup will always work during outdoor sessions, so don’t feel you need to go full face with false eyelashes and a bridal style up-do.  Wear your hair out if it’s more comfortable, chuck on some natural make-up that you feel suits you best and let your inner beauty shine.   There will be no extreme close ups, so don’t stress if you have a pimple or don’t feel like your make-up is on point.  Alternatively, go make-up free if that floats your boat.

If you’re stuck with what to wear for your session, I have a client closet full of gorgeous maternity friendly gowns for you to choose from, complementary when you book your session with me.  Head to my Instagram story highlight “Client Wardrobe”, and you can peep the gowns and decide if there are any you might like for your session.

If you prefer to buy or wear something of your own, then the choice is entirely up to you.  For some guidance, I have a free guide on what to wear during your session with me, paying specific attention to maternity session dressing.  Head to my Instagram bio for the link to download for free.  I always bring a couple of my gowns as a back up, just in case we experience a wardrobe malfunction on the day.

Newborn Sessions

Yes!  Family, maternity and newborn sessions can all take place in your home, and I would love to come to you.  If you would like a fresh 48 session (newborn session within the first 12-48 hours after birth), this can take place while still in the hospital, or at your home.  Best time of day for these kind of sessions is in the morning, between around 8am – 11am.  For fresh 48 sessions, booking in advance is essential to ensure I have availability.  If your little one comes early (or late), don’t worry – I will shuffle my schedule to fit you in.

The best time to book a newborn session is 6-14 days after the birth, while baby is still tiny and mostly sleeping.  You can book a session for when your little one is a bit older (e.g. 1-2 months), however they are more easily disturbed at this age while posing for pictures. The best time of day for these sessions is in the morning, as afternoons/early evening babies tend to be more… needy!  A nice big meal before your newborn session (for you and baby) will work wonders.

I don’t generally bring props to a newborn session, with the exception of maybe a rattan basket (if you would like one) and some wraps/swaddles.  I’m more about capturing real life, rather than staged photos.  All the props we need (pillows/cushions, good lighting, loving parents) will be at your house, and if we’re heading to an outdoor session, I’ll bring everything we need.

I’m all about keeping things easy when it comes to dressing babies because what really matters to me is capturing their adorable features. Your baby is naturally perfect, so there’s no need for fancy outfits or props. I’d say go for a simple, comfy onesie without any designs or logos. You can’t go wrong with a classic white onesie, but solid, neutral colors work great too. Feel free to pick out a couple of your favourite swaddle blankets for us to use too.
